Talcum powder, known as baby powder in the Johnson and Johnson product line, has been in use for over a hundred years. It is commonly used to maintain dry skin and prevent odors. Baby powder is made of 99% talc, which is actually mined from the ground like coal or precious metals. It is often found in areas where asbestos is also prevalent.
Over the last forty years or so, evidence has built that connects the use of talcum powder with the onset of several types of cancer, with several peer reviewed scientific studies showing that use of the powder coincides with an increase in the cases of cancer. The earliest studies stretch back to 1971, showing traces of asbestos within the talc-based products, yet manufacturers have never added warnings to the packaging or took any other measures to mitigate these risks.

Is Talcum Powder Being Discontinued?
The manufacturers, Johnson and Johnson, announced on October 18, 2019, that they were recalling around 33,000 bottles of talcum powder as a result of the FDA finding traces of asbestos within the products. On May 19, 2020, they announced that the products would be removed from sale completely in the U.S. and Canada, citing a 60% fall in sales since 2017, rather than the ongoing health concerns.
What Brands of Talcum Powder Contain Asbestos?
Johnson and Johnson Baby Powder and Shower to Shower are products that have a high talc content (99% for Baby Powder, 50% for Shower to Shower) which is associated with asbestos contamination. Other brands of talcum powder and baby powder may include talcum as well. Is Talcum Powder Harmful?
The main ingredient in talcum powder is talc, which is mined from the ground and is often found in areas with high asbestos content. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance, and traces of it that are present in the talcum powder can lead to particles entering the body. This is especially true for women who use the product to dry the genital area. Those particles can congregate around the fallopian tubes. Patients who went on to develop cancer in this area have been found to have talcum powder particles lodged around the cancerous cells under examination.
Who Qualifies for a Talcum Powder Lawsuit?
If you have used Johnson’s Baby Powder or Shower to Shower products regularly for at least a year and have subsequently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, endometroid ovarian cancer, or mesothelioma within the last 3 years, you may qualify for a Talcum Powder lawsuit.
What Can You Recover for a Talcum Powder Lawsuit?
Those who file a lawsuit and are awarded a settlement may recover the cost of the medical bills incurred during the cancer treatment. In addition, they may recover lost earnings from being unable to work, emotional damages, pain and suffering, and other financial costs that have been incurred.
