What Should I Do After a Car Accident?

The minutes after a traffic accident can be terrifying, confusing, and nerve wracking. There are a few things that you should do immediately after getting in an accident to ensure a positive outcome, for both your financial and physical health.  

1. Make sure that you and everyone in the car with you is physically unharmed. If someone is injured, call 911 if you are able.  
2. You may want to contact 911 anyway, if police and (if necessary) ambulances are already not on site.  
3. If you are severely injured, you will be taken to the hospital via ambulance before filing a police report. You will do the next few steps after you are conscious.  
4. File a police report with the officer who arrives. Be sure to note the officer’s name and badge number if you are able.  
5. Get information from the other driver, including name, address, phone number, and insurance agency.  
6. Take pictures of the accident from a variety of angles, being sure to focus on any damage to your car as well as injuries you or passengers may have.  
7. Seek out the names and contact information of any willing witnesses. It will be helpful, but not necessary, to record their statements on video.  
8. Contact a personal injury attorney. If you aren’t sure if you need their assistance, but suspect you may want to pursue a claim, contact them anyway. It is better to have them involved as soon as possible after an accident to maximize any settlement you may receive.
