Zantac Recall

Table of Contents

Zantac (ranitidine) is a drug used to control the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It has been commonly used to treat severe heartburn along with other intestinal problems such as ulcers. Approved by the FDA in 1983, it was an extremely popular antacid drug, with over 15 million prescriptions a year. That made it at one time the 50th most prescribed drug in the country, without considering over the counter sales in the millions as well. It was the first drug ever to generate $1 billion in annual sales in the U.S.

Tests on the drug led to an FDA announcement in 2019 that NDMA, a known carcinogenic substance, had been found in Zantac, leading to a withdrawal of the drug from the market.
