Elmiron Recall

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) is used to treat bladder problems including interstitial cystitis, osteoarthritis and prion disease. Often referred to as painful bladder syndrome, these issues can cause severe and ongoing discomfort, which Elmiron seeks to remedy.

Recently, studies have shown that there is evidence that chronic exposure to the drug may lead to retinal toxicity, which replicates a condition known as pigmentary maculopathy (which can lead to vision loss and blindness), along with other vision problems.

Was Elmiron Recalled?

No, currently Elmiron remains an FDA approved drug, as it has been since September 26, 1996. However, in July 2020 the FDA did announce a change of labelling, updating the required labeling to include retinal pigmentary changes, otherwise known as pigmentary maculopathy, under the warnings and precautions notes of the drug’s label.

Is Elmiron Still on the Market?

It is still on the market, however in addition to the mentioned labelling changes, on June 16, 2020, the FDA also announced that patients should receive retinal examinations within six months of starting Elmiron, and then periodically while continuing long-term treatment.

Why Is Elmiron Dangerous?

There are a number of side effects associated with Elmiron, including diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach pain. In addition, hair loss, insomnia and headaches have been reported.

Most importantly, recent studies have identified evidence that chronic exposure to the drug over time may lead to retinal toxicity, which replicates a condition known as pigmentary maculopathy, along with other vision problems including vision loss and retinal damage.

The FDA suggest that these cases occurred after at least 3 years of use of the drug, and cumulative dosages are a risk for patients where these eye problems may develop.

How do You Qualify for an Elmiron Lawsuit?

If you have been diagnosed with pigmentary maculopathy after taking Elmiron, then you may qualify for a lawsuit against manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Because the statute of limitations to file a claim against Janssen Pharmaceuticals is relatively short, it is important for anyone who thinks they qualify to consult a lawyer as quickly as possible.

Even though Elmiron has not been withdrawn from the market, it may be too late for many of the people who took the drug. If you have been diagnosed with vision problems after taking Elmiron, you deserve justice, and the attorneys at Phoenix Injury and Accident Law Firm are here to help you achieve it.

What Can You Recover from an Elmiron Lawsuit?

Those who file a lawsuit and are awarded a settlement may recover the cost of the medical bills incurred during treatment and diagnosis. In addition, they may recover lost earnings from being unable to work, potential future lost wages, emotional damages, pain and suffering, and other financial costs that have been incurred.
