What Type of Head Injuries Can You Get in a Car Accident?

There are 5 main types of head injuries, and all of them can occur in a car accident. While all of these are considered “Head Injuries”, it’s important to remember that any time you do any damage to your head, you may have a Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI. All of these can be categorized as brain injuries, or TBI’s.

  1. Concussion: Concussions range in severity and occur when your brain strikes the inside of your skull because of force. This can happen in a car accident upon impact.
  2. Contusion: A contusion occurs when you hit your head against a hard surface. This may, in turn, cause a concussion due to the force of your head hitting the object. In a car accident, this can occur if you hit your head on the steering wheel, dashboard, window, or any other solid surface.
  3. Penetration: Penetration occurs when an object penetrates your skull. When your car is in an accident, many objects inside your car can become dangerous projectiles including glass from the windshield, objects on your dashboard like a GPS, or any other objects in the car.
  4. Diffuse Axonal: This essentially means that your brain is moving faster than your skull, and occurs due to extreme rotation or shaking. In a car accident, this usually happens at high-speed accidents when your car stops abruptly on impact.
  5. Coup-Contrecoup: This type of TBI occurs when your brain jerks suddenly in your skull. This is most common during extremely violent or forceful collisions, such as when a car flips. The impact causes the brain to jostle back and forth in your skull, damaging both sides of your brain.

When Do Brain Injuries Symptoms Show Up?

Depending on the type and severity of your brain injury/ head trauma, your symptoms will either show up immediately, after a few hours, after a few days, or even weeks after the accident occurs.

What are the Symptoms of Brain Injuries?

Here’s a list of some of the common symptoms of a TBI. If you have one or more of these symptoms, please see a doctor as soon as possible.

  • Temporary Loss of Consciousness
  • Headache or Feeling of Pressure in the Head
  • Amnesia
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred Speech
  • Confusion
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Difficulty Balancing or Coordinating
  • Cognitive Changes
  • Bleeding from the Ears
  • Coma
  • Fatigue

Can You Fully Recover From A Brain Injury After A Car Accident?

The answer to this largely depends on the type and severity of the brain injury you’ve had. If you have a mild concussion, you should have no issue achieving full recovery. For the more serious types of brain injury, it depends on the type, quality, and speed of treatment. Also, even with the best treatment, your brain injury may be too severe to recover from.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Brain Injury?

Your recovery time will, again, largely depend on the type and severity of your brain injury. For mild concussions, the average recovery time is 7-10 days, with most people recovering from concussions within 1 month. For more severe brain injuries, most of the recovery time happens in the 2 years after the injury occurs, with the most crucial part of the recovery happening in the first 6 months. Some people even report recovery progress 5 – 10 years after the incident.
