Rear-End Accidents

A rear-end accident occurs when a vehicle crashes into the back of another vehicle. This can occur while the front car is either moving or stopped. While rear-end collisions usually occur at low speeds, they can still result in injury or damage to both cars.

What are the Main Causes of Rear-End Accidents?

Rear-end accidents usually occur in one of two scenarios:

  1. The car in front slows down or suddenly stops, which does not give the rear car enough time to react.
  2. The rear vehicle quickly accelerates into the front vehicle when the driver of the rear vehicle expected the front vehicle to move, such as at an intersection or traffic light.

More than that, rear-end accidents occur because of many various reasons. Common reasons include:

  • Drivers being distracted by phones or passengers
  • Tailgating the car in front
  • Delayed reactions due to age, eyesight, or medication
  • Panic stops
  • General erratic driving
  • Reduced traction due to weather or worn pavement

How Common Are Rear-End Accidents?

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, rear-end accidents are the most common type of collision, making up nearly 29% of all car accidents. In 2018, there were 48,073 rear-end accidents in Arizona alone, which made up 44% of the total car crashes in the state that year.

What Injuries Can You Get From Being Rear-Ended?

It’s important to note that depending on the type and speed of the rear-end collision, your injuries can vary in severity. We’ve listed the most common types of injuries the occur in rear-end crashes, from the most common injuries to the more severe injuries. Click the links on these injuries to learn more about them.

Is Fault in a Rear-End Collision Automatic?

While fault for rear-end collisions is a lot clearer cut than some other types of accidents, by no means is fault automatic. Generally speaking, the rear driver is considered at fault unless proven otherwise. The driver of the rear car almost always shares some fault in the accident because it is the rear driver’s responsibility to leave a safe following distance between them and the front car to allow for sudden reductions in speed or stops.

However, there are a few circumstances in which the rear driver is not considered at fault.

  • Situations where the lead car reverses suddenly.
  • When the lead car stops suddenly to make a turn and does not actually turn.
  • When the lead car’s brake lights do not work.
  • Situations where the lead car gets a flat tire and does not pull over or turn on their hazard lights.

In each of these examples, the driver of the front car would likely be considered at fault.
