T-Bone Car Accident Injuries

Table of Contents

The severity of a car crash often depends on the location and force of impact of the collision. When a T-Bone car accident occurs, it means that there is usually not enough vehicle to protect the passenger from the brunt of the force. When a car crash normally occurs, the part of the vehicle that is hit collapses around the passenger compartment in order to protect the person. In a T-Bone crash, there is simply less car where the collision occurs. This results in T-Bones being very serious accidents.

What Is a T-Bone Car Accident?

A T-Bone accident happens when the front of one vehicle hits the side of another vehicle. This is most common at intersections. Either one car disregards a stop sign or stoplight and drives through the intersection at the same time as another car. Or, a bad judgement call on a green light may also cause a T-Bone accident.

In addition to intersections, T-Bones can occur on the freeway when one car loses control and skids into another car. They can also happen in parking lots when, for example, a car is baking out of a spot and is hit by another car.

How Common Are T-Bone Car Accidents?

Across the country, T-Bone accidents accounted for 13% of all car accidents in the United States, while accounting for 18% of all fatal accidents. In Arizona, there were 18,260 T-Bone crashes across the state in 2018, accounting for 17% of all car accidents. Additionally, T-Bone crashes are by far the most common type of accident at an intersection, and 30% of all car accident fatalities in Maricopa county occurred at an intersection.

Who Is at Fault in a T-Bone Car Accident?

The party at fault in a T-Bone car accident is largely dependent on how the accident occurred. Depending on the circumstances of the accident, here are some of the parties that can be considered at fault.

  • Driver: When the accident occurs at an intersection (by and large the most common place a T-Bone accident occurs), whichever driver violated traffic laws is at fault. For example, if one driver had a stop sign that they ran, and the other driver had right of way, the first driver is liable.
  • Manufacturer: If either or both of  the vehicles involved in the crash had a faulty part that contributed to the crash, like bad brakes or a stuck accelerator, then the manufacturer of that part may be considered at fault.
  • Another Driver: Sometimes, the at-fault driver in one accident may be avoiding another collision. For example, at an intersection there are three cars. One car has a green light and is going straight, one car is making an illegal left turn, and the third car is also going straight. If the car making the illegal left turn forces one of the cars moving straight to swerve, hitting the third car, the at-fault party is still the driver of the car making the left turn. This may be the case even if the third car never actually hits either of the other cars.
