What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury caused by the rapid back-and-forth movement of your neck. This often occurs in car accidents due to force of impact, particularly in rear-end accidents. It affects the bones in your spine and neck, as well as the muscles and ligaments in your spine, neck, and shoulders. Additionally, it can cause your brain to jostle in your head, which could cause a concussion.

Can a Minor Car Accident Cause Whiplash?

Any type of car accident can cause whiplash. However, it is most common in rear-end accidents. The main aspect of car accidents that cause whiplash is when a moving car comes to a sudden, complete stop.

What Are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

You may have whiplash if you have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Neck Pain and Stiffness
  • Worsening of Pain with Movement
  • Loss of Range of Motion in the Neck
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the Shoulder, Back, and Upper Arms
  • Tingling or Numbness in the Arms
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Memory Problems

What Should I Do If I Have Whiplash?

If you have any of the symptoms of whiplash, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. This is so that you can rule out a more major injury, such as broken bones, as well as to start the treatment and recovery process as soon as possible.

How Long Does Whiplash Take to Heal?

The majority of people heal within 3 – 4 weeks with no long-term repercussions. However, the length and quality of recovery will depend on the person and severity of the injury.
